Staff Bulletin for the Week of September 12

Advisory Wednesday this week

Mr. Higgins sent out the advisory plan on Wednesday, 9/7/2016.

Professional Time

As a follow-up to the faculty meeting last week, here is the ELL presentation that wouldn't play correctly:  EL presentation. There are some examples of modifications that could be made for EL students.  Our EL teacher, Klaudia Sienko is another excellent resource for information about our students and strategies to support them.

This Wednesday, you'll be working with your departments. You'll be spending time discussing your goals for the year as a department in preparation for your own, individualized goal-setting meeting.  While each teacher may have their own individual goals in terms of specifics, members of your department will be working toward similar goals, helping to support the collaboration among your smaller course-level or other data teams. Also at this time, your department should be generally outlining their work for the year on our shared Wednesday calendar, located here:   BEHS-Shared/Wednesdays/16-17 Wednesday calendar (title and location of document, not web address).

Data team time is meant for:
Focus for Data Team Work
Collaboratively planning assessments and units
Reviewing assessments and units vertically within the department to see how skills build
Analyzing the results from the assessments given (looking at results AND student work) at the course level
Discussing instructional practices based on the planning AND student performance at the course level
Connecting with other teachers out of their data team/departments about language

We're hoping to spend more time on what is highlighted in red above this year, now that we're in a relatively good place with assessments and units.

In the Wednesday calendar, you'll notice a tab for each department.  Use that calendar to map out your time to plan how you most effectively will use your time as a team.

News, Announcements, and Reminders

Club Fair. The Club Fair will be taking place during all four lunch waves in the Cafe Courtyard on September 29.  Please feel free to talk it up in Advisory, the day before on Sept 28. Please communicate with Creighton to update your club information.

Parking. You may have noticed that our parking has been impacted this week by materials for the field. Of course, they were delivered early and right in the middle of where we were trying out our new system, but fingers crossed, the materials won't be there for long. Student parking alone should be impacted, but we appreciate your understanding and patience in the parking lot in the next couple of weeks.

Field trips. Many of our students have limited opportunities to travel or share experiences outside of their own hometown of Bristol; one of the reasons why we find field trips such a valuable experience for our students. We are a a large school with very active student groups so we've found that there could be field trips planned by different departments or groups, often very close to one another. Governance Council discussed field trips and put forth these procedures at the end of last year:

For student permission for trips:
  a) Student permission slips need to indicate to teachers whether the trip is considered enrichment or curriculum. Teachers can deny students the opportunity to attend enrichment trips but cannot deny trips that are considered co-curricular activities.
b) Activity restriction does apply to all field trips. Teachers leading the trip will need to check with our administrative office if any students heading on the trip would be restricted from the activity. Student permission slips can only be given to those students who are not on activity restriction. Trip leaders must request that information at least one and half months prior to the trip.
c) Permission slips should be distributed to students no more than one month prior to a field trip.
d) Reminders should be sent to the full-faculty of upcoming trips with students attending one week
prior to the trip.
e) Once trips are approved, trip leaders should communicate with Mr. Higgins to be sure they are included on our events calendar.

Field trip approval reminders. Please use the field trip approval form that is available on-line in the Faculty Handbook. Extra copies are available in the front office. Prior to submitting your application for approval by administration, please be sure to speak with our school nurses regarding your trip. They have important information to share with you prior to taking students on a field trip. In order for your trip to be approved, you will need to have that medical form signed.

Student announcers: Two years ago we had two great students who each week would share the week's upcoming events to be played as a video during homeroom. Last year, we had no students volunteer. Please look for those students who can shine in that role and forward their names to me. I'm looking for no more than two students who have great school spirit, comfort in front of a camera, an ability to record themselves, and reliability.

Bright spots. So many of you are trying new approaches and exciting strategies. Consider signing up for Twitter, where you'll be able to see what our faculty is doing, reading, thinking about . . . The most recent tweet: Mrs. Roberts will be doing "Character Day" (and it is NOT acting like a book character) with her foundations students. Check out the periodic table of character here: http://www.letitripple.org/character-day/
