Staff Bulletin for Week of November 10, 2014

Advisory on Wednesday.

Please remind your students of the bell schedule and review your advisory plans before Wednesday.  Advisory planning time is scheduled for November 19th.

Wednesday Meeting:

This Wednesday we will begin with a staff chat sponsored by Science in the library.  From 2-2:30, teachers will meet in departments.  At 2:30, we'll meet in the cafeteria for our faculty meeting.  You'll find the agenda here.

BE Events this Week:  Support Our Students!

Reminders and Due Dates:

Welcome back Gina Chace!  We're glad you're back with us!

The focus of Wednesday's guidance and administration meeting are 504 students.  If you have a student on a 504 plan that is not performing well or if you have questions about students' 504 plans, please let their guidance counselor know and we'll review the case on Wednesday morning.

Attendance list:  Since attendance information is available to you on PowerSchool for meeting attendance for all of your students, we're no longer going to be sending the daily attendance list. You should be using PS attendance to verify absences and reports cuts to the office.

Duties:  The hallway near the front entrance and gym is very crowded in the mornings.  If teachers who have the duty near the security office can help clear the hallway by moving students toward the cafe, it would be much appreciated.

Intercom:  We are looking into changing the passcode for the intercom system.  Please be very aware of students who might be near the phone  in your classroom and never leave your class unsupervised.

Newsletter:  We're not having a monthly newsletter this year, but rather a seasonal one.  If you have an item for the winter (Nov-February) newsletter, please email me by January 15.

Posters:  Please remember that all posters and flyers need to be approved by an admin and should be hung only in designated areas.  If your event  has passed, please be sure to send students around to take down flyers for events that have already occurred.

Staff Bulletin for Week of November 3

Professional Development on Tuesday, November 4

8:30-10:00am:  Unit Planning/Development, incl. assessments
Location:  Begin in your departments and move into data teams
Your department chairs will review our goals for our years' work and departments will choose next steps (continue unit planning, continue to develop assessments, review the work that has been completed).
10:15-11:45am:  EdCamp Style meeting--PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE!!!
Locations:  TBD at BE
This is an opportunity to have discussions, explore resources, share strategies, etc. about topics of YOUR choosing.  Feedback was positive about this opportunity last year.  However, for this Tuesday, there are almost NO topics yet suggested.  Please keep in mind that by proposing a topic and agreeing to facilitate the conversation, there is not an expectation that you need to prepare a presentation.  You're really inspiring a conversation by developing a question or using the time to meet a need you've found in your own practice.  Here is the link:  https://docs.google.com/a/bristolk12.org/spreadsheets/d/1h4pQaFM-fR-8tYHA9aF_pZctOYLZABJPWVPKeKxZPU8/edit#gid=0
On Tuesday morning, staff can review the opportunities and choose which meeting they'd like to attend.  If you do not see anything you'd like to discuss, start your own discussion.
I've heard people discussing:  classroom management, vocabulary instruction, interdisciplinary connections, technology, google, AVID strategies--all would make great topics.
If your data team is planning to use the entire day to continue their work in unit planning, some one from  your data team should enter that into our unmeeting list.
12:30-3:30pm  OTL--Unit Planning/Development
Our common core leaders will be sending you more information about this.

Wednesday Meeting:

Instructional Data Team; continue working on unit planning.  Guidance to work in admin conference room.

BE Events this week:  Support Our Students!

Stomp Out Stigma:

Beginning on Monday, students in our Individual and Family Development  will be campaigning to stomp out stigma related to mental illness.  In B7/8 classes on Monday, students will be sharing a presentation regarding mental illness with several classes.  On Thursday, they'll be passing out green ribbons and promoting stomping out stigma by a footprint banner in the cafe. The day will culminate in a presentation by the Institute of Living about stomping out the stigma related to mental illness.

Reminders and Due Dates

Student of the Month:  We had only one nomination this month.  :(  Please take a few minutes before Friday to submit one of your students for student of the month.

Quarter One Grades:  The first marking period closes on October 31, 2014.    All grades will be due on November 6th, 2014at 2:30pm.

The administrative team signed off on a number of grant applications!  BE Staff have submitted over ten mini-grant applications.  That is so great to see!  If your project/idea is not funded this year, discuss your idea with your department chair since they are currently developing their budgets for next school year.  Budget proposals from departments will be no later than November 7th.

The focus of this Wednesday's Admin/Guidance meeting is Attendance.  If you have concerns about the attendance of one or more of your students, please talk with his/her guidance counselor prior to Wednesday.
