News and Announcements

Grades are due by 2:00pm on Monday, February 2.

Recommendations:  Please remember there are no more formal "recommendation days" so you'll need to plan this into your class meetings.  As you're reviewing mid-term performance with students, it would be an opportune time to discuss their progress thus far and your recommendation for next year.  All recommendations must be completed by February 15th.    Please see resources in "Preparing for the Second Semester" if you do not recall how to enter recommendations.  Teachers new to BEHS can contact Mrs. Lucia Infante ext. 118 for directions.

Still hope:    Please remind those students who might be on the cusp of failing for the year that there is still hope to recover given the summer school policy. As a reminder, students who pass for the semester only need to attend summer school for the semester they had failed.  The purpose of this policy was to encourage students to keep working until the end of the school year.  Now would be a great time to have some indivdiualized conversations with students.

Grade 8 Open House will be held Tuesday from 6:30-8:30pm.  Clubs and activities should be ready to start by 7:10pm in the cafeteria and surrounding hallways.  Thank you in advance for your participation in this evening.  Parents and students are always excited about seeing the number of opportunities they will have here at Bristol Eastern High School.  (Snow date, February 5)

Please welcome:    Deborah Garner will be student teaching with Mr. Fleischman.
Service Study Hall  Period A1/2  Do you know students who hate sitting in study hall?  Please refer them to the service study hall.  The study hall allows students to use some time to complete homework, prepare for classes AND serve both the school and Bristol community.
Operations: Meets Monday.  Remember, this is the group who meets monthly regarding all school and building facilities and processes.  If you have a concern, please email Melanie, Erin W., or John S. so that it can be added to the agenda.
Governance: Remember, this is our governing body to recommend programs (classes) and policies.  On Thursday, we will be discussing a proposal for a quarter credit class for freshmen.  We'll also be discussing a proposed policy of student IDs and a policy regarding the reporting of our progress toward school expectations.  Teachers who are interested and invested in the direction of the school are encouraged to attend.  We need you!
Don't forget these other methods of support for students:

Student Support Options for Semester Two

  • We will have three options for students to receive additional support in place of their study halls for semester two:  1) Library, 2) Tutoring Center, 3) Workroom.  These are excellent opportunities for students and we're encouraging you to utilize these options by scheduling students for these possibilities.
  • To do so:
  1. Then find the date you wish to add a student.  Open that spreadsheet.
  2. You'll find the library tab first at the bottom of the sheet, along with workroom, tutoring center, and other.
  3. Click on the tab for the place you'd like to send the student.  Type their name for that period.
  4. Please note that you can do this at any time.

Reminders:

Student of the Month:    Do not miss this opportunity to recognize those students who have demonstrated our core expectations around responsibility and respect.  Please be sure to enter your nominations here for student of the month:  https://docs.google.com/a/bristolk12.org/forms/d/1-i7HpozrADx3bkvDKSwqJFWqgK3IbpFKIxU7sxcYM_0/viewform

Newsletter:  I only received on submission for a newsletter so it looks like this is not a viable option for winter.

Meetings for Teachers

Admin/Guidance meeting will be centered on students with attendance issues.  For quarter one, 10% of our students had missed 4 days (10%) of the school days.  For quarter two, 20% of our students had missed four days (10% of the quarter).  We're planning for a lesser percentage for quarter three and we'll be discussing the following:  new strategies for Tier II and Tier III interventions, special education absences, and the new district manual for attendance improvement.

Staff Bulletin for Week of January 26

This Wednesday, we'll have an instructional data team meeting from 1:40-3:20pm.  The Office of Teaching and Learning will be leading the item analyses with you on Wednesday, February 4.  Please note the change.

 Reminders and Due Dates:

Quarter Two (Q2) & Semester 1 (S1) will end on 1/26/2015.
Quarter Three (Q3) & Semester 2 (S2) will begin on 1/27/15.
The Quarter Two (Q2) and Exam (E1) grades must be submitted by Monday, February 2, 2015 by 2:30 pm.  Grades will be stored for review shortly thereafter.  Remember to click on "Grades Complete" so that the bar turns green!

Please welcome Deborah Garner will be joining Jeffrey Fleischman as a student-teacher this semester.  Deborah is coming to us from the University of New Haven.  Please stop by and say hello when you have the opportunity.

College Credit Night  This Tuesday night several of our teachers, counselors, students, and our administrators will be highlighting the many opportunities we provide at Bristol Eastern High School to earn college credit while taking classes here.  Parents and students are invited to attend this presentation at 6:30pm on Tuesday.  Please encourage your students to attend.

Blood Drive  Please note the Blood Drive on Thursday.  The Blood Drive will occupy room 139.  Study hall will be moved to the cafeteria and auditorium on Thursday.  Students should have had teachers provide signed permission to attend from the prior Blood Drive that was canceled due to snow.  You will receive a list of who had donated late in the day on Thursday or Friday.  With the change in semester, it is possible that second semester teachers did  not have the opportunity to sign permission because this was rescheduled.  Please support and recognize our students who are donating for their community.

There are no parent meetings this week.
