Instructional Note
“Telling students what they will be doing but not why and how and when and when not presumes a tremendous amount of motivation and skill. Some students may learn well enough without whys, hows, whens, and when nots, but many more will not" (Fisher and Frey, 2014).
Still focused on learning objectives, think about whether or not you include the "whys, hows, whens, and when nots" when you are presenting what students are learning each lesson. Student motivation on the part of students is something with which we are all concerned. Could adjusting the way we share what students are to learn with them improve their motivation? Send me an email with your thoughts or add a comment on the lowdown!
News, Notes, and Reminders
BEHS website redesign. Janet is working on a redesign of our school website. For the new format, the district is requiring a "tagline" under the title of the school. We'd like our students' and faculty input. We'd like each homeroom to email me with a tagline by Thursday. We'll then send out a vote of the top 5 on Friday.
Attendance conversations. Hopefully you've been able to have a conversation or two with our chronically absent students with whom you have a relationship. We've improved our attendance by 10% of students in the month of March attending more regularly this month than we had last March. We've had more than 240 students who at some point this year were missing 10% of the school year, who have improved their attendance due to the interventions we've put in place. We still need your help. Talk with the students who were on the list distributed at our last faculty meeting to encourage students to not miss any additional days this year.

Earbuds. Earbuds and headphones within classrooms is at the teacher's discretion. We've noticed students wearing headphones when students are working in groups or other times that seem less intentional. When you're allowing students to wear headphones in a classroom, there should be a purpose for students wearing them; they should not be allowed to wear them if students should be interacting with students or teachers.
